Cane Cares’ Food Drive Donates 1,000 Meals to PATH

Cane Cares’ Community Food Drive was a massive success! Special thanks to Lazy Acres for donating 4,000 grocery bags, which we then distributed to homes throughout the Mission Hills neighborhood. And our beloved community then answered the call, exceeding our wildest expectations: You donated a literal truckload of non-perishable goods that added up to roughly 1,000 meals!

All donations went to our local food bank overseen by People Assisting The Homeless (PATH). When they attended our Chili Cook-Off event and saw the incredible amount of food we helped gather for San Diegans in need, they were truly inspired by your generosity! We’re honored to be working with an organization with a reputation for selfless outreach to the homeless and hungry throughout our community. Stay tuned for April’s edition of our impact report, where we extended our work with PATH to help even more people find shelter!

Cane Cares Pledges $10,000 to Sister League

Cane Cares is excited to announce that we have pledged $10,000 from our upcoming Golf Tournament to Sister League of San Diego! The tournament proceeds will go directly to Sister League as they partner with us to prevent homelessness for women in San Diego.

From Sister League’s website: “Founded in 1942, Sister League was initially organized to provide housing to women and their children who were separated from their husbands during WWII.”

“Since then, Sister League has continued to provide safe housing and supportive day programming to adult women affected by mental health issues, homelessness, trauma and domestic abuse – issues which unfortunately are prevalent in our San Diego community today. By providing a safe and supportive home, Sister League helps women become more confident and self-sufficient.”

We’re so excited to be working with an organization that’s doing such important work in our community. To learn more about them, please visit sisterleaguesd.org. And to help raise these funds, register at canecaresgolf.org.

Cane Cares Helps 17 People Find Secure Housing

Cane Cares’ partnership with People Assisting The Homeless (PATH) continued to touch lives in February, with the total number of individuals rising to 17 so far this year.

PATH Case Manager Martha Baxter described another inspiring story, about an Army veteran who had struggled with substance abuse and been through several San Diego shelters in the past 3 years: “The gentleman originally refused case management services. After some persistence…PATH ensured the veteran with a housing voucher, medical services, psychological evaluations, and reestablished VA services.”

“Finally in February 2024, using a VASH voucher, the client secured housing at Grand Island Apartments in Oceanside. A beautiful new facility that represents dignity and a fresh start for someone working hard to rebuild their life. In order for him to move in, he needed to pay his portion of the rent after the subsidy which the veteran did not have at the time. At this time, Cane Cares stepped in and very quickly made up the difference, so that the veteran can move into his beautiful home. Most importantly, it stopped this veteran’s cycle of moving from one place to another and began his new life with dignity.”

Stories like these are truly what motivates us to continue our work here in San Diego. And we’re excited to raise even more money this coming year at this year’s Cane Cares Golf Tournament on September 20!

Last year, we held our our 1st Annual Cane Cares Golf Tournament and were able to raise over $17,000 at the event. With the money raised, we were able to approve a grant that will help to provide housing to a father and his two-year-old daughter from Guatemala who came to the US seeking asylum. Fleeing poverty, extortion from a local cartel, and an ineffective government, together father and daughter traversed 3,000 miles, often by foot, to come to our country.  After crossing, the single dad was placed in numerous detention centers including 8 months in a Nevada prison solely because he was seeking asylum.  During that time, his daughter suffered growth and speech delays. Somehow they endured and were reunited when she was 19 months.  Now they are working hard, assimilating, and enjoying life in sunny San Diego.

Mia Visits Mission Hills Post Acute Care – January, 2021

This Martin Luther King Day our founder’s daughter, Mia, came up with an idea for giving back all on her own. She got to work writing sweet notes to the patients at Mission Hills Post Acute Care, letting them know that they are loved and  that they are not alone. Mia found it fascinating that so many of these patients were alive to witness MLK’s early days as a social activist. They saw him become a leader of the Civil Rights movement and witnessed firsthand the hero that he became and the incredible legacy that he would leave behind.  “You must have such great memories of him,” Mia wrote in her notes. Thanks to Mia’s love letters, the patients at Mission Hills Post Acute Care were able to feel much less alone, as they too reflected on Martin Luther King Day.
